On My Bookshelf: Full Catastrophe Living by Jon Kabat-Zinn

December 1, 2018 By Tara Moorman, PhD

“Awareness is not the same as thinking. It is a complimentary form of intelligence, a way of knowing that is at least as wonderful and as powerful, if not more so, than thinking.” Jon Kabat- Zinn, Full Catastrophe Living

Jon Kabat-Zinn is one of my heroes.  I’m not kidding. He is one of the amazing humans that we can credit with bringing mindfulness to the West and packaging it in a way that our Western minds could really latch on to.

In this wonderful book, Kabat-Zinn presents his 8-week program called Mindfulness-Based-Stress-Reduction, a program that is being used successfully in hospitals and other institutions to help people living with chronic illnesses and chronic pain.  Kabat-Zinn presents clear information about why Mindfulness is so important, and he gives many examples from folks that he’s worked with or who have engaged in his program. He also provides easy to understand instructions for starting your own Mindfulness practices.

If you’ve wondered how Mindfulness could benefit you, or you’ve been looking for instructions that weren’t couched in a spiritual or religious perspective, this is the book to have.

Jon Kabat-Zinn has done us all a favor.  He’s made the benefits of Mindfulness clear and accessible to everybody.
