The Key is Inside. It’s Called Choice

November 19, 2018 By Tara Moorman, PhD

“The strongest principle of growth lies in the human choice.” —George Elliot

Y’all! I can get so stuck. I mean, I can get so wound up in my own head about changes I want to make and things I want to do that I find myself paralyzed. Sitting there staring at my closet (My closet is at the foot of my bed making it the center of my visual universe late at night when I’m stuck in the middle of the big Overwhelm) and doing absolutely nothing else. Well, I’m not doing anything in the Real World anyway. Nothing but sitting and staring. And breathing. Thank goodness I don’t have to think about breathing!

While I’m paralyzed or locked up in the Real World, my Mind World is often a dazzling, spinning, creative wonderland. I am going to the gym, dancing, drawing, building out a Van, or living in Iceland for 3 months out of the year. I am DOING so many things! I am also a kinder, more compassionate, financially responsible, and put-together person.

All the possibilities have me completely Locked Up. The possibilities, the judgments, and the ever-repeating question, “but how?”

Something’s gotta give, or I’ll be sitting here staring at my closet right up to the end of time (my time anyway).

The great thing is that I have the Key. That key, the key that will unlock my paralysis, is Choice. I just have to choose. That’s it. Pick something and go with it. Close my eyes, reach into the dazzling, spinning, creative wonderland and CHOOSE ONE THING and then DO SOMETHING (anything).

Yeah. I hear you. How do I do that when EVERYTHING is SO Beautiful? That’s the tough piece, right? It’s tough because I’m not sure which thing is the BEST THING. What’s the RIGHT THING to do?

Here’s my answer: It doesn’t matter as much as I (as you) think it does. Honestly. The point is to make the choice and take the action. That’s it. Once I make the choice and take some action, even a small bit of action, the gigantic padlocked band that’s holding me in place will release. For good, you ask? No. Probably not. But if I can use my key over and over again, I will unlock myself over and over again, and I’ll be growing, moving, shifting and changing in the process.

I accepted a long time ago that I have a VERY active, VERY creative mind, and that I am a storyteller that can get trapped up there in the story rather than moving down here on the Earth. It’s the way it is. I have also learned that JUST CHOOSING something and taking action has never let me down. Ever. (Granted, my mind isn’t spinning stories of murdering people or robbing banks – if yours is, I’m afraid we are on different wavelengths entirely). When I choose to just pick one of the sparkles that’s flying around in my mind and take action on it, I feel better, stronger, faster, and more aligned with my Self. I feel free rather than paralyzed or locked up.

If you’re stuck staring at your own closet (or Netflix or out the window at the front headlight of your car), take a deep breath, and reach into your Mind-Universe and grab one thing. Choose one thing and take one small or large or medium size step on that one thing. Use your key. Unlock yourself.
