Breathwork – Because Sometimes Words are not Enough

August 22, 2019 By Tara Moorman, PhD

Sometimes words are not enough.  That’s just the truth.

I’ve been a mental health counselor for 17 years, and I do believe that talk therapy is worthwhile, but I also know, from my own personal journey and through my professional experience, that sometimes it isn’t enough, and sometimes it can only take a person so far.  At a certain point, talk therapy can reinforce the notion that things are all in our head and that our ability to rationalize and verbalize SHOULD make everything better. Talk therapy has nothing to do with embodiment and can only take us so far into integration. Talk therapy has little to do with healing the body and the soul.  Its ultimate focus is the mind, and often only accesses the very surface.*

Habit-Patterns – A Lost Soul’s Magic

August 13, 2019 By Tara Moorman, PhD

I find myself thinking a lot about habit-patterns of energy.  I am deeply interested in the habit-patterns of thinking, feeling and behaving that humans develop around trauma, stress, and pain.  I want to know how those habit-patterns grow and develop and often end up sabotaging our lives, and I seek to understand the process of moving out of those habit-patterns and ultimately developing a new, whole identity.  You see, I believe that our habit-patterns are indicative of a fracture, a Soul Loss, if you will.   [Read more…] about Habit-Patterns – A Lost Soul’s Magic

Child’s Fear, Adult’s Sabotage

August 12, 2019 By Tara Moorman, PhD

My Child Self has been scared recently…

Lately, my Creative Heart has been longing to write stories.  I’ve always written, but over the past 30 years or so, most of my writing has been non-fiction – either work- or education-related.  I started writing fiction again at the beginning of the year by entering the NYC Midnight Short Story Challenge.  I enjoyed it immensely, and though I didn’t place, I loved my story.  Despite all the positive emotions I felt, my writing practice fell apart.  I entered a couple more, small contests, wrote daily for about a month, and slowly started the process of stopping.   [Read more…] about Child’s Fear, Adult’s Sabotage

Yes…And

April 9, 2019 By Tara Moorman, PhD

Learning to Yes…And your scene partner is one of the first lessons you learn if you take an Improv class.  It is the foundation upon which any improv scene is built. This might seem like an easy trick.  I mean, improv scenes are generally short, maybe 2 to 3 minutes unless you’re doing a longer mono-scene, and improv is a hobby, right?  It’s not REAL life.  It should be easy to do the little, inconsequential Yes…And trick while playing make-believe.  Uh-huh. Guess what. It’s not.

Saying, “yes…and” rather than “no” and “but” can help you open your life to more juiciness, but it takes practice. For most of us, “no” and “but” are autopilot responses, and we need to be very conscious to counteract the habit.

Speak Your Feels

April 2, 2019 By Tara Moorman, PhD

There are so many places that are actually Schools.  There are so many messages that are actually lessons — if we are open and willing to be students.

In addition to being a therapist and life coach, I am also a theatrical improviser.  I play pretend on stage every other weekend or so, coach a team, and am training to teach improv at a local theatre.  It’s a big part of my life, and the longer I practice, the more I see improv lessons as life lessons.
